How is Today Expenses different from other expense trackers?
Most expense apps make you tap through forms, dropdowns, and category pickers. Today Expenses works like a paper notebook. Each day has a page. You write a line like “coffee 4.50” or “dinner with Sarah 34”, and on-device AI extracts the category and amount in the background. There is no setup, no budgets to configure, and no account to create.
Do I need to set up budgets or categories before I can start?
No. Open the app, write your first line, and you are tracking. Categories are detected automatically by the on-device AI. If a category is wrong you can tap the record and change it.
Is my financial data private and secure?
Yes. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no third-party servers. Your records are stored locally on your device and synced privately to your other Apple devices using your own iCloud account via Apple’s CloudKit. Today Expenses cannot see your data.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. Both AI models run entirely on your iPhone, so writing, categorisation, charts, and widgets all work without an internet connection. iCloud sync resumes automatically the next time you are online.
What is the notebook style interface?
Each day is a page in a notebook. You write expenses and income one line at a time, and you swipe to flip between days exactly like a real notebook. There are no forms, no modal pickers, and no required fields.
Which iPhones are supported?
Any iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Apple Intelligence is not required.
What AI models does the app use?
Two on-device models. Apple Foundation Models, powered by Apple Intelligence, available on iPhone 15 Pro and later. And Pre-Trained Model, a lightweight classifier trained specifically for Today Expenses on 16,700 expense and income notes across 71 everyday categories. Both run on-device and work offline. You can choose either one in Settings.
Do I need Apple Intelligence to use the AI features?
No. Apple Intelligence is optional. The Pre-Trained Model works on every iPhone running iOS 26 or later, with or without Apple Intelligence, and is fast enough to categorise as you type.
What happens after the 24-hour free period?
After 24 hours new users can choose Monthly at $3.99 per month, with a 3-day free trial for eligible users, or Yearly at $14.99 per year. No card is required for the 24-hour period.
Can I edit records if the AI gets something wrong?
Yes. Tap any record to open the editor and change the category, amount, currency, or date. Manual edits are saved immediately and sync via iCloud.
Does it sync across my devices?
Yes. Today Expenses uses Apple’s CloudKit to sync privately across all Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account. There are no Today Expenses servers in the path.
